AI Wars: Google Strikes Back
It’s been exactly one day since OpenAI’s announcement of GPT-4o that lit the world on fire and gave the world its first taste of AI agents.
Well, Google just did the same.
To be fair, we expected Google had to be cookin’ something, so seeing the first look at their newest voice model dubbed “Project Astra” at their AI conference yesterday certainly was no surprise.
But enough talking. Run the damn demo!
Immediately, the tone difference between GPT-4o and Astra stuck out like a sore thumb. Astra sounds like your average phone voice assistant, while 4o sounds like a giant flirt.
Now whatever floats your boat, I guess it’ll boil down to personal preference. And that’s gonna be the reality of having your own AI agent going forward. We’re about to witness companies dropping AI agents left and right, each with their own different quirks. It’ll just be a matter of what you want kind of personality you want yours to have. Crazy, right?
So Google’s conference, what else did they talk about?
Here’s a quick summary:
Gemini AI Model Updates
Gemini 1.5 Pro can now handle larger documents up to 1,500 pages for summarization.
New Gemini 1.5 Flash model for smaller AI tasks like summarizing conversations, captioning media, and data extraction.
Improved translation capabilities in 35 languages for Gemini Advanced.
Gemini integration with Gmail to summarize attached PDFs and videos.
New Generative AI Models
Veo for high-definition video generation from text.
Imagen 3 for more realistic text-to-image generation.
Audio Overviews to generate spoken summaries from text.
AI Sandbox tools for creating music and sounds from prompts
Hardware
Trillium is Google's 6th-gen TPU chip for AI workloads, coming late 2024
Looking to compete with Nvidia’s Blackwell chip
If you’ve got an extra 20 minutes, here’s a vid of Google’s conference chopped up to show only the good stuff.
Online Dating Just Took A Left Turn
It’s not everyday that you happen to stumble upon your soulmate. It takes time, energy and kissing a lot of toads!
But Bumble founder Whitney Herd wants to help you skip some toads with their AI dating concierge.
Based on their description, I imagine a mini-me running around, flirting with all the boys in the yard, giggling and winking, telling funny jokes and narrowing down the prospect list left and right.
Outsourcing dating is something we’ve never considered. After all, what happened to authentic human connection? Is that going to exist in the future of AI or will it be a world of “Her” and we’re just in denial?
Be honest… if you could “create” your ideal companion in an AI companion sandbox (think of tweaking the settings on your favorite single player game to have the specific difficulty and rules you desire) why would you deal with the drama of relationships? Oh wait, you want more drama? Simply turn up the slider! Sick of doing the dishes, it’s got you covered!!
Oh the future is bright… or dark, depending on how you look at it.

Just something fun and interesting around the web.
Ya know, there’s quite a bit of nostalgia running through these veins. So when I saw this pic hit my timeline, I about burst with childlike excitement. There was just something so wholesome about flipping through the BestBuy ads and circling the games that you wanted so your parents could mayyyyybe get one for you…
Ah, sweet nostalgia.
