... and Buckle Up, Trekkies. The Borgs Are Coming!
Hello, fellow nerds š§
Appleās Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) just got a date, and the hype couldnāt be more real.
Clear your schedule for June 10-14 because the announcements coming out of Appleās camp are going to be huge. The biggest one? A new and improved Siriā¦ hopefully. Honestly, an upgrade to Siri has been needed since forever ago. Please, Apple gods, hear our Siri prayers š
Hereās the daily quests in AI to complete today:

The World of Open-Source AI is an Absolute Clusterf*ck
Weāve mentioned open-source AI quite a lot over the past few weeks, praising companies for going down the path of righteousness. The paladins of AI, you could say.
But it turns out, these guys are just dirty oathbreakersā¦
And it all starts with: nobody can agree on what the hell open-source AI actually means. Meta seems to be all about it, and Elon's suing OpenAI for not being about it enough.
The problem? Without a clear definition, the AI giants can basically do whatever they want and slap an "open-source" sticker on it.
Which, weāre no experts, but that seems mildly concerning.
Take Meta and Google for example. Theyāve released their AI models as āopen-sourceā, but they come with licenses that restrict what users can actually do with the modelā¦ so half open-source?
Enter the Open Source Initiative (OSI)
These guys are a team of self-appointed open-source nerds thatāve been creating the rules since 1999. Their new task? Trying to lay down the law on what open-source AI means. Theyāve even dedicated 70 researchers, lawyers, activists, policymakers, and representatives to figure out this elephant in the room.
So far, thereās been no ground madeā¦ yet.
It turns out that AI is an entirely different bag of worms compared to simple olā software. You canāt just release the code and call it a day, no no. Thereās data, models, algorithms, and a whole bunch of other nerdy shit that goes into it.
To be honest, we thought open-source AI meant the traditional definition of open-source, which means the software code is made free and available to the public.
Oh how wrong we were.
So what does this all mean?
Basically, everyone's trying to have their open-source cake and eat it too. They want all the good PR and developer love that comes with being "open," but don't want to give up their competitive advantages.
Which, if left unchecked, you betcha the big dogs are going to make their own rules. As far as open-source goes, thatās not the world we want to live in. So, hopefully, the newly appointed OSI sheriffs can figure something out, and soon.
Buckle Up, Trekkies. The Borgs Are Coming!
The brains at MIT, Yale, and Loughborough University shared their vision for an AI powered, knowledge network, they called āCollective AI.ā
ChatGPT is so 2023
Large AI models, such as ChatGPT, train like me for finalsā¦ an excruciating, energy intensive, sleep deprived ācramā session fueled by copious amounts of Mt. Dew, pizza rolls, and Mike and Ikeās.
And thenā¦ this limited learning window is closed and the model doesnāt continue to learn until the next ācramā session.
Collective AI is OP (overpowered)
In the future, Collective AI will learn like the rest of youā¦ lifelong, continuous learning with the ability to adapt and instantly share knowledge amongst one another.
After all, āhuman knowledge has grown incrementally over millennia thanks to communication and sharing,ā Dr. Soltoggio expressed. What makes AI different?
BUT thereās one underlying assumption for Collective AI to function properlyā¦ AI Agent Democracy.
WTF is AI Agent Democracy?!?
Each AI agent operates independently with their own goals and decision-making instead of being a subordinate to a single centralized AI authority.
Itās crucial to ensure no single Queen Bee is calling all the shots - you know, checks and balances, fam.
BONUS: What makes Collective AI different than humans?
