WWSD? Sam Altman aka SAMA - The Man, The Myth, The Legend

OpenAIā€™s founder has quite the history.

  • Programmed and took apart a Macintosh computer at 8 years old

  • Like Steve Jobs, heā€™s an obsessive visionary CEO whoā€™s company gave emā€™ the boot just to be welcomed back.

  • Studied computer science at Stanford for 2 years before dropping out.

  • Founded Loopt mobile app, one of the first companies at Y Combinator, they were there at the same time as Reddit.

  • Sold Loopt for $43 million in 2012 and created venture fund, Hydrazine Capital, with $5 million of his money and Peter Thiel investment.

  • 75% of Hydrazineā€™s money went toward Y Combinator companies including Redditā€™s Series B round.

  • At 28, in 2014, Altman was chosen to became Paul Grahamā€™s successor at Y Combinator.

  • Elon Musk and Sammy cofounded OpenAI in 2015 so AI doesnā€™t wipe out humans.

  • Stepped down from Y Combinator in 2019 to focus on OpenAI and became CEO.

  • The rest is history!!

  • Lastly, heā€™s a doomsday prepper.

"I try not to think about it too much," Altman told the founders in 2016. "But I have guns, gold, potassium iodide, antibiotics, batteries, water, gas masks from the Israeli Defense Force, and a big patch of land in Big Sur I can fly to."

Recently, Sam was interviewed by MIT Technology Review and shared a few insights:

  • ā€œWeā€ as normal people, will want killer assistants that know us inside and out and ā€œjust work.ā€

  • Woahā€¦ he called ChatGPT-4 ā€œincredibly dumbā€

  • Generative AI is sorta stuck in a chat interface but what if it isnā€™t? Sh*t is about to get wild!

  • Training data is being gobbled up but soon it may not be a problem at all.

A new AI just uncovered 27,000 asteroids from old telescope pics

Each green dot is one of the 27,000 newly discovered asteriod

On top of that, this new AI, codenamed THOR, also found 150 asteroids thatā€™ll be floating right past Earth. Keyword, past Earth. There wonā€™t be any scenes out of the movie Armageddon featuring Bruce Willis dismantling an asteroidā€¦ yet.

Now you might be thinking, ā€œWell how in the hell did 27,000 asteroids go sleeper cell agent and remain undetected?ā€ Honestly, really just human error.

Apparently, studying asteroids is all manual work. And painstakingly so. Traditionally, astronomers find asteroids by analyzing telescope images taken hours apart to spot moving points of light. With over 100 billion stars in the sky, some things will definitely be missed. Although to date, weā€™ve found 1.2 million asteriods this way, which by the way is absolutely bonkers, but thanks to THOR, we can rest our eyes a bit.

Instead of manually scanning a small pocket of stars, THOR can look at a measly 1.7 billion points of light in one image to detect any strange anomalies. Yeah, thatā€™s a lot of stars.

And to put the power of THOR into a bigger perspective, astronomers are going to hook it up to an 8.4 meter long telescope, aim that son of gun at the southern sky, and to their estimates, find over 2.4 million more hidden asteriods. In its first 6 months.

Keep Bruce Willis on speed dial. He just might have to save Earth, again.

šŸ˜ F2P Friday

Where we share an up-and-coming AI freebie to keep an eye on.

The idea of using gamification to become more productive sounds more fun than whacking a clown with his own shoe.

The app is a little quirky and asks you some personal questions about how you prefer to finish tasks. For example, maybe you like batching tasks or thrive on waiting until the last minute.

Here are some quick notes:

  • Simply put, as you complete tasks, you earn XP. There are various tools to use besides the To Do List but frankly, we havenā€™t unlocked all of the fun games like ā€œTask Rouletteā€ or Breath To Achieve.

  • The UI isnā€™t fully intuitive but you figure out how to navigate with some trial and error.

  • Thereā€™s a helpful AI assistant avatar in the top right near your profile icon.

Love the idea, still questionable on the execution, but try it out and let us know what you think!!

The app is free but they try to get you to ā€œpayā€ for the free trial via Stripe. Just click the X! You do NOT need to enter your CC information to try the app.
