We’ve Cracked The Code on How to Speak Sperm Whale

To be honest, I thought all you had to do to speak whale was watch Finding Nemo 63 times, and boom, you’re fluent in whale. But, I guess there’s more to it. Much more to it, in fact.
Apparently, Sperm Whales are one of the more chatty underwater creatures to my surprise and “speak” in what’s called codas—a series of clicks that serve different purposes. Like, talking with their best whale friend, or telling a clan member to keep swimming and find their own school of kelp.
Scientists have identified over 150 different types of these codas, but outside of a tiny subset that relate to caller and clan identity, they have no idea what the rest mean. Until now.
Thanks to our lord and savior and resident whale expert, Mr. Machine Learning himself, the mystery of Sperm Whale codas is being unraveled. Using a giant dataset of over 8,500 collected codas, marine biologists fed an AI to learn and find patterns of all the different clicks Sperm Whales can do.
The results turned out rather musically. It seems Sperm Whales seem to talk in tones tempo, and rhythm and it all varies dramatically depending on different physiological, ecological, and social pressures.
So it turns out that Dory only knew like one Sperm Whale coda… and here I thought she was pretty fluent. Well I’ll be dipped, she could’ve fooled me.

How To Make $100K When College Ain’t It
The journey of a 29 year-old tattoo artist turned AI professional.
For some, college just ain’t it.
Hannah Maruyama decided there has to be a better way…
Traveling from Savannah to Honolulu, Hawaii with her husband, Ryan, they pursued their dream jobs as children. She would become a cosmetic tattoo artist and he would become a firefighter.
They opened and ran a cosmetic tattoo studio, Yama Studios, while working full-time jobs. Ryan worked at the fire department while Hannah worked at a call center for a tourism company.
Hustling from 4:30 am until 10 pm got old quick. Although she loved it, it was a grind she recalled.
Then, COVID-19 hit. They were forced to shut down their studio and Hannah was furloughed from the call center.
Recognizing it was time for a career change, she did what any modern 29 year-old would do… searched for answers online.
Tech certifications were the answer. She decided to become a Salesforce Certified Administrator via a 4-week certification program. Redditors suggested with the certificate alone, she’d earn more than $70,000 which was 2x what she earned at the call center.
$300 and one month later, she completed her certification.
3 months later, she landed a remote Salesforce Developer gig at a business management consulting firm in Honolulu. She was paid $70,000.
While applying, she searched for jobs emphasizing technical and soft skills over a bachelor’s degree.
In her application or during her interview, she emphasized she was willing to learn anything as quickly as she could and called herself a “shiny new penny.”
During her journey, she shared her experiences on TikTok under @degreefree.
Her experience resonated so strongly with others, she went viral.
In October 2021, the couple closed Yama Studios and decided to go all in on Degree Free, online career coaching and free resources to help young people pursue careers without a college degree.
Shortly after, Hannah changed jobs to join Neo License, an AI software startup, as their head of operations, remotely, where she was paid $100,000.
She recognized early that the business consulting firm she worked at previously had a ceiling and she wasn’t able to grow her career. She traded up for a more hands-on experience at a startup to continue her “upskilling.”
Hannah has since received certifications in data analytics, project management and more.
After being raked over the coals in Hawaii, they now live in Texas where they enjoy a lower cost of living as well as taxes.

What’s happening inside the Realm
A list of side quests to explore and more.
✍️ Some scientists out there have been struck with the AI fever, and can’t seem to stop using AI to completely write their research papers.
🎨 There’s a new AI algorithm out there to give a litmus test if a painting is fake or not, and apparently the 40 its found on eBay are the tip of the iceberg.
📸 No, Katy Perry wasn’t at the Met Gala but even her mom didn’t know!
🍎 Apple committed to making their own AI chips at the latest Apple Event. But damnit, we miss Steve Jobs.
That’s all the quests we have for today. Check back tomorrow for more!
