Reddit’s got a new bag of tricks up its sleeve to fight the internet’s degenerates. Drum roll, please!

…….. It’s a brand-spankin’ new degenerate fighting, moderator-buffing, AI model! Now this comes as no surprise being that Reddit is starting to sell its data to train other LLMs. Did Google have a hand in this decision to clean up the filth on the front page of the internet? We’ll never know, but AI bot or not, Reddit is the wild west. Godspeed, AI model. Godspeed.

EA + AI = Greed x Infinity

AI has hit the gaming front, and EA (Electronic Arts) has definitely taken notice. CEO, Andrew Wilson, spoke at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference on Wednesday and shared his vision of gaming.

In true EA fashion, it all boils down to money. How can they make billions of dollars for their investors?

Well, Wilson sees that “generative AI will make EA’s development 30% more efficient, help grow its 700 million-strong player base by “at least” 50%, and lead to players spending 10-20% more money on its games.”

Oh boy… Sure, generative AI will certainly make games easier and more cost-effective to develop, but making great games, at least in EA’s case, doesn’t seem to be the main focus (see the reviews of the last 10 games they’ve released, particularly on Steam). Instead, greedy monetization practices ie. loot boxes, ultimate team packs, and microtransactions have been the priority. AI will now enter that mix.

Now I pick on EA, but they certainly won’t be the only ones using AI to line their pockets. Every major AAA studio out there will be taking notes.

The silver lining to all this? Because of AI, the barrier to creating games will be at an all-time low. That means games can finally be created by gamers, for gamers — a mission statement I wish every game studio lived by. There will be much more room for Indie studios to thrive, and create games out of passion, not to solely please investors. Sure big corporations like EA will try to siphon every dollar out of their fan base, no surprise there, but I truly believe with the power of AI a beautiful gaming renaissance is upon us. And I’m so ready for it.

Hello Dubs, Goodbye Subs - AI in Anime

Eh, I wish 😭 Accurately dubbed anime with lip sync and facial expressions using EMO in the future? Yes, please!!

But until then, the popular anime streaming platform, Crunchyroll, announced plans to begin testing AI to help with subtitle translations and user experience recommendations.

With over 13 million paying subscribers, Crunchyroll has a cult like following just waiting on the edge of their seats for the latest release of their favorite anime.

In order to keep fans from revolting, they strive to release episodes “as close to the Japanese release as possible.” And by providing a high quality, trusted source for anime, they’ve been able to reduce pirating.

The question is if/when AI will be sophisticated enough to translate all of the nuances of Japanese speech.

Implementing AI-generated subtitling assistance into their localization workflow may or may not be possible in the future but they don’t want to be left behind and won’t know unless they try.
